Is The Internet Phone Any Different?Either internet phone can be a soft phone, which converts the desktop PC into a phone, or it could be a standalone phone system. There are basically three options you could choose from depending on your requirements.
Analog Telephone AdaptorThe ATA-analog Telephone adaptor is used to connect the traditional telephone to a computer or network so that the old phone can still be used to make calls over the internet. This is because internet based long distance calls are cheaper. An ATA is definitely cheaper than a VoIP phone. The ATA does the analog to digital conversion and connects directly to the VoIP server. The ATA can connect even fax machines to the internet. Some of the ATA’s provide two ports to maintain your old PSTN network incase of power shut down. This helps you make the transition to Voice over IP easier. The other connection is usually an Ethernet adaptor to be connected to a broadband device (ADSL modem, cable modem etc.) The simplest ATA can have one or more RJ-11. Registered Jack-11 is a telephone connector with four or six wires used for connecting the telephone. The ATA can have an embedded hardware with software for digitalizing the voice to transmit over the internet or it can be plugged into the USB port of a computer, which does the conversion and the transmission. For large enterprises ATA’s with multiple telephone Jacks, a Ethernet hub or switch is needed to connect to the LAN. ATA needs H.323 or SIP to communicate to the VoIP server. This is also known as a VoIP gateway. The features and specifications are given below. ATA Features and Specifications
