  • Queuing is a process that occurs at the router. In case of Voice and Data packets, a priority-based queue adopted to allow voice/real time applications before the data.
  • Loss of packets that is the result of it being dropped by the router due to congestion is another major trouble. This is an issue that can be minimized with better error detection and correction schemes at the receiver.
  • Priority of Packets on the IP network is also an issue that has been dealt with in the recent past and IETF recommendations have been implemented in protocols. The IP header contains a field Type of Service” that indicated priority. Time sensitive protocols like SNA-Systems Network Architecture or SDLC.- Synchronous Data Link Control
  • For the IP network another protocol is the RSVP- Resource Reservation Protocol which still faces a bottleneck with the routers that cannot implement it along the network. Another alternative is the DiffServ- Differentiated Services.
  • MPLS- Multi Protocol Label Switching is another protocol, which works with IP, ATM-Asynchronous Transfer Mode and frame relay and fixes predetermined paths to network traffic. When this is combined with other applications that does packet shaping it maintains the quality no matter what traffic is generated on the network.
Qos for VoIP is thus priority based transfer across the network in other words it is a network management tool to avoid congestion, latency and increase link efficiency. Cisco IOS QoS is a tool box, and many tools can accomplish the same result. Others include Kentrox Q1300, Kentrox Q2300, ipConductor QoS appliance etc. It is up to you to look at the traffic and see which it the best for you. These software tools have bandwidth management that can be set up in routers through a graphic user interface. And support the various means of implementing QoS for VoIP like MPLS, DiffServ, RSVP etc. Many of these tools are optimized to work over different types of networks like ATM and Frame relays as well.
