Effective Bandwidth Management: QOS For VoIP
The Fundamental aspect of any Quality of service is how well the service
is been provided. With a network the fundamental aspect of Quality
is to have the better service according to your needs. In a VoIP network
the fundamental problems that could be better so that there is QoS
VoIP are:
- Clarity - fidelity and clear signal
- Delay - causes talker overlap
- Echo - caused by crosstalk between send and receive signals
QoS VoIP seems to become important only after you experiencing
problems in the network and you will find that Voip Qos reflects
in excessive delay and loss of packets. The factors that govern
voip Quality of Service are
- Throughput is the amount of data (inbound/outbound) that
goes through the network.
- Availability of service is a continuous connection for data/voice.
- Delay in the transfer of packets over the internet in case
routes are congested.
- Delay variation occurs in case one packet is routed differently
and takes longer to reach. This creates problems of reconstruction
especially in real time service like VoIP
- Loss of Packets is another major issue. In case of major
congestion packets are sometimes dropped and not forwarded. The
ratio of received packets compared to those sent is also a measure
of the quality of service.
All these put together is very complex as not service provider
can totally guarantee a hassle free service. Stringent measures
are put in place and these enhance voip quality compared to the
normal service provided. SLA-Service Level Agreements are more in
case of enterprise VoIP as these are critical to a business.
Provisions of QoS VoIP
Ensuring voice quality would mean
- Elimination of Echoes
- Elimination of the problems arising due to Loss of packets
or delay of packets when there is congestion.
- Ensuring that the outbound voice traffic of critical application
is always maintained even in a circumstance of Denial of Service
Attack.
- Ensuring there is adequate hardware and other equipment
to take an increased throughput.
- Determining is there is proper monitoring and maintenance
structure is the system. If this process is automated it ensures
in better quality.
- Determining the needs of the employee and giving them the
right amount of usage of the network.
- Determining the critical applications and see that they
perform even in a denial of service environment.
- In the present scenario where legacy equipment is being
used still. QoS should be implementing in conjunction with these
operators of legacy phone connections till they migrate to IP telephony.
Even if they do not migrate it is important to see that the Quality
of Service is implemented
- Newer technologies to ensure that the medium and the equipment
can deliver better quality voice. For this it means increased bandwidth
availability for the VoIP service. It also means developments in
the components used. Some components that can influence the quality
of Service are: Codecs, Switching elements, Routers, Gateways, Compression/decompression.
