VoIP: Prices Keep Dropping
There is a price war presently in the VoIP market as providers vie
with each other for a market share. Internet telephony is a major
cost savings over traditional phones. Customer is the King as the
battle hots up among the various providers. Voice over internet protocol
market is matured with many major players slowly moving into it.
Voip free services are generally between PC’s and free software
downloads are available. The catch is that you can only speak to
users who have a PC with broadband connection. Free voip is not
offered if you were to connect to any other IP telephone, which
has a number, or to any other traditional telephone.
Cost Involved In a VoIP Service
The much-hyped appeal of providers is make free calls. Some of the
other adverts are: ‘make international calls for dead cheap
rates’. Cheap voip calls over the internet does help you save
charges, eliminate duplicate wiring, cut maintenance costs and promote
better management. These are all if you already have a part of the
infrastructure in place. The real costs of VoIP are hidden and looking
at that is important.
VoIP Service Providers are an important part of voip prices. Factors
you need to look at are:
- Plan costs, which may be either monthly charges or minute
charges for international calls. Local calls by most providers are
free.
- It is for Residential or business usage. In case of business
or call centers, it is best to consult an expert who would look
at the total charges and offer you suggestions.
- Residential users must make sure their computer system
is able to connect to the VoIP service. Most service providers provide
equipment needed to connect to their network. It can be either an
analog Telephone adapter or any other device.
- Residential plans come in two basic forms cost for unlimited
talk time/ costs per minute of talk
- Business plans use a number of phones and plans are according
to their requirement. Other business features like Fax, voice mail
is usually given along with these plans.
- Activation and cancellation charges are important as some
networks charge you at the time of installation where as others
do not.
- Additional Features cost more (Number Portability, Different
Area Code, A number of IP numbers, Voicemail, Voice mail to Email,
Caller ID, Call Forwarding, Call Block, Conferencing and Do Not
Disturb). Business Features include videophone as well.
Equipment Costs are mostly incurred if you are running an enterprise
or business. The residential users are not much affected but it
depends on the Service Provider and the plans they adopt. Equipment
that costs the user is:
- Analog Telephone Adapter connects the traditional phone
to internet lines. This is in case the service provider does not
provide it to you free of charge.
- IP telephones in case you want a few additional features
that your ordinary telephone cannot do.
- For Business user’s the costs may seem apparent.
They need to take it a variety of factors before deciding. Ethernet
switches, edge routers, media gateways, voip servers are some additional
items they need to purchase in case they do not have.
- In case the business has been using traditional telephones
then cost per IP telephone or handset and headset increases cost.
To accommodate the various users you will need to set up a PBX this
is different from the traditional PBX used for phones. This PBX
is used for internet applications. If the PBX is already existent,
it has to be optimized to handle VoIP traffic.
- Good design costs as both data and voice need to be converged
and maintained from internet based attacks. Security is also another
important factor in the long-term costs of the company.
- Scalability and reliability an essential for large companies
push up prices on the equipment procured.
