Gateway Control VoIP Protocols

There are many voip protocols such as follows
MGCP-Media Gateway Control Protocol

Cisco and Telcordia have proposed Media Gateway Control Protocol. It defines communication between call control elements. It is basically for telephony gateways. It monitors events in IP phones and gateways.
Being a control protocol it instructs these call agents or media/telephony gateways to send media to specific addresses. The MGCP implements the control through a set of transaction. The following are the eight types of commands it uses.
  • Create Connection.
  • Modify Connection.
  • Delete Connection.
  • Notification Request.
  • Notify.
  • Audit Endpoint.
  • Audit Connection.
  • Restart In Progress.

MEGACO
It is the joint result of IETF and ITU-T H.248 for control of elements in a physically decomposed multimedia gateway. The Media Gateway converts circuit switched voice to packet based traffic on the IP network (uses RTP) and MEGACO seeks to address this connection to the IP network. It is a general framework for gateways, multipoint control units, and interactive voice response units.
Protocols And Their Use
VoIP needs to address key issues to be accepted universally and the protocols determine whether these can be possible. SIP VoIP is presently gaining ground for its simplicity and for the prime reason that it is a protocol of the IETF. When Interoperability is to be looked at then MEGACO and MGCP appear.

H.323 has many features but the problem is duplication and complexity. The Internet Protocol has adopted many other protocols and is now become the IP suite. It is just a matter of time where issues of interoperability, Quality of Service and other issues are addressed. The strength of the Protocols lie and adhering to principles that can implement
  • Quality if Voice
  • Interoperability
  • Security
  • Scalability
Many of the protocols have failed on these fronts and recommendations and standards are still in the offing for betterment of VoIP so that it will be the future of telephony.
