These have been various algorithms proposed for perceptual measurement. The technique is usually a differential process where there is a test signal and a reference signal. The algorithms process the ear model for both the signals and compare it. The response is basically that of the human auditory system. There are various methods adopted by different algorithms MOS- Mean Opininon Score Live – Listener TestingMean Opinion Score (MOS) testing is a subjective way of testing voice quality. Voip mos testing is the best way to evaluate voice quality because it uses live listeners and hence would evoke responses the way humans normally perceive. The only problem with voip mos testing is cost and time taken. The result is dependent on that given by the listeners and so is called “Mean Opinion Score”. This method has been carried out earlier and does not seem to be a viable option when compared to automated testing.PSQM-Perceptual Speech Quality MeasureAlso known as ITU-T P.861, the objective of PSQM algorithm was to evaluate Speech Codecs. This was successfully introduced into the telecom market by OPTICOMPEAQ- Perceptual Evaluation of Audio QualityITU-R BS.1387 is a perceptual model to study Wide-band Codecs. Many approaches that were available were studied to combine the proposal and after verification a measure was recommended under BS 1387 in 1998 and revised in 2001. This measure is for Perceptual Evaluation of Audio Quality.PESQ- Perceptual Evaluation of Speech QualityITU-T P.862 is for the evaluation for the whole end-to-end signal path and not only for the speech codec. PSQM could not analyze delays and packet loss over the internet as it did not have delay compensation. Advancements such as PSQM+, PSQM99, and PSQM/IP had tried to adapt PSQM to the rigors of Internet. Nevertheless a new standard was needed and resulted by the combination and refinement of PSQM and PAMS. PESQ is optimized for VoIP applications and is also useful for hybrid end-to-end applications. Specific parameters of audio are analyzed using PESQ. Time warping, variable delays, transcoding and noise are also analysed.PAMSThis is another algorithm used in automated voice quality testing. It gives a score or rting depending on the comparison of received signal to original signal. It is designed for network wide testing and is capable of including delay, jitter and other events that affect ‘Voice Quality in VoIP’ into its analysis.Internet protocol is is a non linear technology and cannot be measured by sample testing. Minimum parameters a network must attain for quality of service cannot be fixed with an IP network. Internet was designed to transmit in bursts. This data is sent on flexible paths with varying amount of bandwidth. Voice over IP requires a continuous path and is delay sensitive. Software can manipulate packets at gateways and therefore new testing methods are needed.
