Wireless VoIP – Is It Really Secure?

Most businessperson’s essential is his laptop and his connectivity is Wi-Fi. All laptops being manufactured today have Wi-Fi as a built in configuration. Business and commerce are already taking advantage of the two hottest technologies. Mobile technology to obtain instant
results and web based commerce using internet technology. Wi-Fi(Wireless Fidelity) complies with the IEEE 802.11 wireless Ethernet standard.
WiMAX
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) needs to pass the standards set by IEEE 802.16. WiMAX has improved over Wi-Fi and is developing into the framework for broadband wireless technologies. Most WiMAX specification are in the Giga Hertz range which still require licensing. It has stronger encryption and increased bandwidth. It looks at improving performance even in cases outside the Line of sight connectivity. WiMAX looks to connecting wireless to internet and is an alternative to cable and DSL for at least 5 kilometers. The data rates so far have been 2 Mega bits per second.

WiMAX is said to increase wireless voip, video conferencing. The interoperability of WiMAX and Cell towers can make it a viable option for 3G/Wi-Fi mobiles and laptops. VoIP wireless phones are being developed by mobile phone manufacturers. With these improvements many are suggesting that the future is Wireless VoIP. Though this technology is in its infancy many are touting it as the next happening in the communications industry. Wireless VoIP phones will have a better voice quality and a mobile workforce with a single device that works both as computer and phone is enterprises dream come true. The average phone user is also benefited a lot by it. Their phones would soon be mini computers and entertainment technology combined.

Wi-Fi Telephony has not taken off due to three factors
  • Handoff of calls between network platforms
  • Cost of infrastructure to support calls
  • Security
The major problem is standards and protocols. Mobile network uses signaling protocols based on SS7, while the WiFi segment uses VoIP protocols such as SIP. The problems are of seamless inter-working. Wireless voip networks are used like a computer system and are therefore open to hacker attacks and viruses that are prevalent on the internet. Many WiFi home users do not know fully about security necessities and capabilities. They need easy solutions for protection of their voice and data communications. The infrastructure is being mixed by providers and the future will see further mixing to provide quality of service. The major issue that plagues Wi-Fi will continue to plague other wireless networks and that is “security”.
